FRIDAY, May 18 (HealthDay News) — Inflammation caused by chronic heartburn may increase the risk of esophageal cancer , a new study finds. The condition — formally known as gastroesophageal reflux disease ( GERD ) — occurs when a muscle at the end of the esophagus doesn’t close properly, allowing stomach contents to leak back into the esophagus and irritate it. GERD can lead to changes in the tissue lining the esophagus, a condition called Barrett’s esophagus, often a precursor to esophageal cancer

Christine Pattinson with grandson Finlay By bizarre coincidence, or possibly a genetic link, her sister had fought the same illness some three years earlier. Both women have now recovered and Christine wants to use her experience to encourage others not to let the symptoms go unchecked

Genes that cause stomach cancer identified
Washington, April 9 (ANI): Hundreds of novel genes that are mutated in stomach cancer , the second-most lethal cancer worldwide, have been identified. The finding by an international team of scientists, led by researchers from the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School ( Duke-NUS ) in Singapore and National Cancer Centre of Singapore , paves the way for treatments tailored to the genetic make-up of individual stomach tumours . Stomach cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death globally with more than 700,000 deaths each year, and is particularly common in East Asia
